A few weeks ago, I was interviewed by a German TV personality about their relationship with their doctors.
Dr. David Brennan, a urologist and University of California, Los Angeles cardiologist, toldthat he was “very concerned” about what he called the “inactive” nature of the relationship between the two of them. “When I see couples in relationships, I would see a couple of doctors who were just trying to make sense of it. It was just not really a question of why they had to do something about it,” he said.
Brennan said that his concerns were “very serious” and that his doctor “never had any idea what [a] relationship is like” for a couple of years, so “we never really knew exactly how we would fit into this relationship. It would always be difficult and complicated, and we never really knew how we would fit into it.”
One of Brennan’s main concerns, however, was that the doctors he was speaking with, who were not the same as the doctors in his practice, were now trying to fix the problem with their own doctors.
In fact, Brennan’s doctor was the American Urological Association (AUA) chief clinical investigator and president for a decade, and he toldThe Sunthat he and his doctor were trying to fix a problem they thought they had identified in their own practice. “I think it was a very good idea, and it worked very well,” Brennan said.
In a statement, the AUA said, “Brennan believes that our doctors should be able to make better decisions about what treatment is best. We’re committed to our patients and their doctors to help them make better decisions about what treatment is appropriate and appropriate for them.”
Brennan also said that his doctor was now taking the time to understand the potential reasons why he believed his doctor was being misleading them.
For example, he said he was told that Dr. John Smith was prescribing Viagra, but he was told by Dr. Janssen that they would be cheaper than Viagra and were “more effective and [could] be used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.”
One of Brennan’s main concerns was that the doctors he was speaking with, Dr. Michael McCall, had been prescribed Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction in his practice for years, but that the drugs were now being used “off-label” because of concerns about the way it affected his patients. McCall said that they had told him to stop taking Viagra because he was worried about the side effects of the drugs.
“What they were saying, and I said to myself, ‘Hey, what’s going to happen if I stop taking them?’ I was so relieved,” McCall said. “We were so glad to see Dr. Smith [on the news].”
McCall said that “I’ve been told by a doctor that there are different ways of treating [ED], and that we should talk to our patients about the pros and cons of each treatment. But I don’t think we can say, ‘Hey, these are the good ones, and they are the bad ones.’”
A couple of months later, Brennan said that he had changed his doctor’s treatment and was now going to see Dr. McCall in person.
In fact, Dr. McCall, who is now a urologist at the University of California, Los Angeles, said that his doctor had told him that he was taking sildenafil, a medication used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, “and it was going to be effective in treating erection problems and not to be used off-label.”
McCall said that it was “very important for me that we [doctor] continue to work with our patients and make the best decisions for them.”
Brennan’s doctor was told that the drugs were going to be used to treat men with ED and that Dr. McCall would be the only one who would be willing to prescribe Viagra. Brennan said that he was told that the two doctors who were willing to prescribe Viagra were Dr. Janssen and Dr. Robert Smith, who is currently on the faculty of the University of California, Los Angeles, in the US.
